Can You Stay in Your House During Asbestos Abatement?

February 15, 2022

Asbestos isn’t a material you should remove on your own. Instead, you must rely on trustworthy asbestos removal companies. When you’re thinking of calling professionals to remove the harmful substance, though, you may wonder, “Can you stay in your house during asbestos abatement?” Find out here.

Why You Can’t Stay in the House

The answer to that question is no. You can’t stay in the home because the servicers must move around and remove materials as carefully as possible. Asbestos is like the removal of termite or rat infestations in this way.

However, there are specific times when you can stay in the home during the elimination process. But you’ll need to avoid certain areas, as asbestos is only harmful if it’s airborne. Still, we highly encourage you to stay out until the entire home is clear of the material.

As you learn more about your asbestos abatement company, familiarize yourself with the asbestos abatement process.

Planning

The first thing your contractor does is create a plan. The plan involves looking over notes from an inspector. Those notes will contain information on the removal procedures they need to follow, such as preparing to clean the area afterward and following all laws on removal.

Marking

After that, the servicer goes around the home and its exterior if needed. They mark areas with tape or other signs. Then, they have all occupants leave the house until they have removed the asbestos.

Creating the Work Area

Once they mark every part of the home, the professional goes in and disconnects some things. They shut off all HVAC systems and block off areas not currently undergoing work to prevent particles from flowing into the vents.

Once everything’s sealed and ready to go, your inspector does one final check before beginning to remove the asbestos.

Removing the Material

Using specialty hand tools and wearing the right protective gear, the asbestos remover will then go ahead and take out the asbestos. Once removed, it all goes into disposable bags with special protective linings.

Vacuuming

Once they remove the asbestos, the worker goes back in with a filtered HEPA vacuum. The vacuum collects any lingering asbestos, including fibers that floated away.

Final Cleaning

Right after vacuuming, the official final cleanup begins. There’s a final test to ensure there’s no sign of asbestos. If everything meets its criteria, the professionals remove the barriers and clean the area one last time.

Once finished, the asbestos abatement team will give you the green light to return home. Contact your asbestos abatement company if you have more questions on whether you can stay home during the asbestos removal process.
